The Richmond rules, from official sources

Removal (Office of Elections grounds)

At the Office of Elections (2134 W. Laburnum Ave.) only: signs go only in the marked mulched spots, and "All signage is expected to be removed upon the close of the given election," or each owner is fined for each sign left.

Streets, medians and poles

No signs on a street, sidewalk, median or other public space: City Code bars any sign on poles, trees, lights, hydrants, traffic signs and other fixtures on public property "without specific approval," and the city says this covers "political campaign signs."

Removal from streets and fines

Anyone may pull an illegal sign out of a public way: "Any citizen is permitted to abate the violation by removal of a sign from a public way without liability." Violations carry "a fine for each offense," and the city can bill removal costs to whoever is responsible for or benefits from the sign.

Who to report to

Zoning enforces signs on private property only. City streets, alleys and sidewalks are handled by the Department of Public Works and the Police Department, so take a sign on a street or sidewalk to them, not Zoning.

When do campaign signs have to come down in Richmond?

We didn't find a citywide Richmond deadline for taking campaign signs off private property after an election: the zoning code that would hold one is on a site we couldn't read, so call Zoning Administration before you rely on a date. Signs on streets, sidewalks and medians aren't allowed at any time, and anyone may pull them. At the Office of Elections on W. Laburnum Ave., signs must come down when the election closes.

How to stay inside the Richmond rules

Get the owner's permission for every yard

Keep the list.

Keep signs out of the road right-of-way

That means medians, roadsides, poles and trees. The rules above say how far back a sign has to sit.

Write down where every sign went

You'll need it on take-down day.

Taking signs down?

Print the post-election sign cleanup checklist for your crew.

FlyerFly is an app for putting out yard signs and door hangers with your own crew. When your team puts out a sign, the app saves a GPS pin, a photo and the time, so you can see where every sign you placed is. While a job runs, your crew member's dot moves on your map with a Live badge, and a GPS trail shows where they went. It does not check whether a spot is legal, so use the rules above. It's nonpartisan and works the same for any campaign.
