The Chesterfield County rules, from official sources

Removal (all temporary signs)

No set number of days: "Temporary signs shall be removed after the advertised use or activity ceases or after the permitted display period has ended, whichever is sooner."

After the Tue Nov 3 election (no day count in the code)

Chesterfield County Code Sec. 19.2-43.D.12

Removal (county property and voting sites)

On county property, campaign signs are allowed only from 5 p.m. the day before voting through the end of voting, in county-marked areas, with no more than three per candidate. If they're still up 24 hours after voting ends, the county gets the campaign to remove them.

By Wed Nov 4, 24 hours after polls close (our count)

Roads and medians

Temporary signs in the public right-of-way (paved roads, medians, roadsides) are illegal. The county removes and throws them away "without notice" under Virginia Code 33.2-1224, focusing on major roads; complaints don't steer the removals.

Poles, trees and setbacks

No signs on "trees, utility poles, or traffic control devices." Outside the VO and UCO districts, signs must sit 20 feet from the edge of pavement or curb and at least one foot off the right-of-way, and 15 feet from other property lines.

Chesterfield County Code Sec. 19.2-43.B.14 and 19.2-43.E

Size, days and permits

On developed residential lots, noncommercial temporary signs may total 24 square feet, each no more than six square feet and five feet tall. All temporary signs are limited to 120 days per calendar year, and any temporary sign over eight square feet needs a sign permit.

Chesterfield County Code Sec. 19.2-43.I and 19.2-43.C.1.a

Who to report to

Report signs on private property to Community Enhancement at 804-748-1500 or through the ELM online portal. Private-property cases go through notices and can take weeks to months. Right-of-way removal isn't complaint-driven.

Taking signs down?

Print the post-election sign cleanup checklist for your crew.

FlyerFly is an app for putting out yard signs and door hangers with your own crew. When your team puts out a sign, the app saves a GPS pin, a photo and the time, so you can see where every sign you placed is. While a job runs, your crew member's dot moves on your map with a Live badge, and a GPS trail shows where they went. It does not check whether a spot is legal, so use the rules above. It's nonpartisan and works the same for any campaign.
